Level 3 is an advanced qualification ideal for anyone wishing to progress their career in hairdressing or that has recently taken up employment as a salon stylist. This qualification is highly practical and provides the skills and underpinning knowledge required to practice as a professional hairdresser. You’ll learn advanced skills, including advanced cutting, colour correction, and creative colouring techniques, whilst exploring current and emerging trends within the hairdressing industry. You will expand your knowledge and understanding on anatomy and physiology and health and safety. Your communication and customer service skills will be developed to deal with problems that may arise within your job role.

How you will study

Candidates are required to complete a number of tasks and tests to show their attainment of practical skills and underpinning knowledge. The summative assessments for the qualification require you to undertake practical tasks and demonstrate knowledge and understanding tasks in an assignment or on-line tests. Practical tasks will require you to demonstrate occupational skills. All practical observations have an observation checklist, and all the criteria must be successfully demonstrated. 

Component breakdown

A minimum of 54 credits is required to achieve the Level 3 Diploma for Colour Technicians. All mandatory units must be achieved; 37 credits and a minimum of 17 credits from the optional units. The mandatory units include 302-Monitor and Maintain health and safety practice in salon, 303-Hairdressing consultation support for colleagues on hair services, 305-Style and dress hair using a variety of techniques, 305-Colour hair to create a variety of looks, 410-Colour correction. The optional units include 304–Cut women’s hair, 311-Bridal hair, 312-Cut men’s hair to create a variety of looks, 316-Create hairdressing design skill, 309-Hair extensions and 317-Promote products and services to clients.
