Childcare Education – Level 3 V Level

The Level 3 Education V Level qualification allows students to engage in a broad study of the education sector. Through your studies you will develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to support children’s learning and development, enabling them to reach their full potential.

This qualification is being introduced in line with Department for Education reforms and is designed to provide a strong academic and vocational foundation. In line with an A Level, the course develops key skills including teamwork and partnership working, professional and personal development, communication and evaluation, alongside research, analysis and reflective skills. The qualification supports progression to higher education and careers in areas such as teaching, nursing, youth and community work and social work, as recognised by UCAS. It also prepares students for progression into the workplace or advanced apprenticeships within the early years sector.

Grade 5 or higher in GCSE English and Grade 4 or higher in Mathematics.

How you will study

The course is studied over two years, combining classroom-based learning with the development of applied knowledge and skills. Content will be delivered and facilitated by subject specialist teachers through a range of taught sessions, activities and independent study.

Assessment will include a combination of internal and external methods, designed to develop your understanding of the subject and prepare you for formal assessments. You will be supported through the use of practice materials and structured tasks to build confidence and familiarity with assessment requirements.

Component breakdown

Unit 1 – Children’s development- External examination
Study of children’s developmental progress from birth up to eight years. Students will examine theories, principles and factors relating to development.

Unit 2 – Keeping Children safe- External examination

The responsibilities of a professional to maintain health and safety as well as ensuring effective safeguarding measures are in place. They will understand what to do in an emergency and when to address concerns about a child’s welfare.

Unit 3 – Play and learning-Internal portfolio

Students explore the concept of play, the influence of theories and approaches to play, and the benefits of play and learning activities for children.

Unit 4– Research and reflective practice in an Early Childhood Setting- Internal portfolio

Students understand how research findings influence policy and provision for children and will be able to reflect on how this influences their own behaviour and expectations in the work placement environment.

The BTEC level 3 National Extended Certificate in Early Childhood Development enables you to prepare for employment in job roles such as:

  • Assistant in children’s centres 
  •  Practitioner in day nurseries or nursery schools 
  •  Practitioner in reception classes in primary schools
