Psychology Summary

Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and the mind. It investigates how we think, feel, act and interact individually and in groups. Psychology is concerned with all aspects of behaviour and with the thoughts, feelings and motivations underlying that behaviour. It is both a thriving academic discipline and a vital professional practice. We are all interested in what makes people tick and how this understanding can help solve major problems in society. Psychology is a science and psychologists’ study human behaviour by observing, measuring, and testing, then arriving at conclusions that are rooted in sound scientific methodology. Applied or practising psychologists use the knowledge gained from this research in a wide range of settings and help people with all sorts of problems, working with them to bring about change for the better. Psychology is a subject that can contribute to all aspects of life and is useful in a range of work areas from medicine, education to business and human resources.

How you will study

You will study classic and contemporary research and learn to evaluate it in small groups.  You will be encouraged to discuss topics and apply the knowledge you have learnt to novel situations. You will develop knowledge and skills of research methods by planning, designing, and carrying out research independently.   

Component breakdown

Component 1: Research methods – 30% – 2hr exam 
Planning, conducting analysing and reporting research using a range of experimental and non-experimental techniques.  

Component 2: Psychological themes through core studies  – 35% – 2hr exam. 
The study of the main areas of psychology and research which follows key themes.  

Component 3: Applied psychology – 35% – 2hr exam. 
Options studied: Issues in mental health, criminal psychology, child psychology
