Physical Education Summary

Sport and PE play a vital role in people’s lives and is an integral part of our society. A Level PE allows you to study the diverse nature of sport and physical activity across three main topic areas. As part of the anatomy and physiology component you will study topics such as the respiratory system, injuries and energy systems. For the skill acquisition and sports psychology component you will study topics such as leadership, aggression and memory. Finally, you will study the socio-cultural issues within sport and physical activity where you will look at wider topics which effect society as a whole. Alongside the theory element of the course, you will be assessed practically in your strongest chosen sport. This is your chance to shine and reap the rewards from years of practice to show your skill level as a part of the Non-Examined Assessment. The Non-Examined Assessment also involves a piece of coursework where you will do an evaluation of an individual playing your chosen sport. This is a varied course which any student interested in the world of Sport and PE will find enjoyable and thought provoking.

How you will study

Physical Education involves studying a wide range of areas, which directly affect performance. Classwork will involve you linking the theoretical concepts you learn to your own performances.  You will need to refer to sporting examples throughout your studies and show a keen interest in class discussions. Practical performances are a must throughout the course.

Component breakdown

Component 1: Physiological factors affecting performance (30% – 2hr exam: 90 marks) 

Component 2: Psychological factors affecting performance (20% – 1 hr exam: 60 marks) 

Component 3: Socio-cultural issues in physical activity and sport (20% – 1hr exam: 60 marks) 

Component 4: Practical Performances (15% :30 marks – scaled up to 45) 

Component 5: Evaluation and Analysing Performance for Improvement (15%: 30 marks – scaled up to 45)
