This qualification is ideal for anyone wishing to commence a career in both ladies and gents’ hairdressing. VRQ’s are structured training qualifications which are highly practical and provide you with the skills and underpinning knowledge required to practice as a hairdresser or barber. This level 2 qualification allows you to develop practical skills recognised by employers, with encouragement to develop your own abilities, communicate and interact with clients within a salon environment.  You will be required to develop an effective working methodology, which will enable you to react positively and creatively across a diverse range of assignments and creative activities.

How you will study

You will be taught relevant underpinning theory in a classroom situation and will be required to complete a number of tasks and tests to show your attainment of practical skills and underpinning knowledge. The summative assessments for the qualification require you to undertake practical tasks and demonstrate knowledge and understanding in an assignment or on-line test. Practical tasks will require the demonstration of occupational skills. All practical observations have an observation checklist and all the criteria must be successfully demonstrated. 

Component breakdown

A minimum of 50 credits is required to achieve the Level 2 Diploma in Women’s and Men’s Hairdressing. All mandatory units must be achieved, securing 36 credits and a minimum of 14 credits from the optional units. The mandatory units include health and safety in the salon, client consultation, shampoo and condition the hair and scalp, promote products and services to clients in a salon, cut women’s and men’s hair. The optional units include styling men’s hair, plaiting and twisting, working in the hair industry and the art of dressing hair.
