Students are encouraged to walk or cycle into school where possible. Students who bring their bikes into school can have extra permissions added onto their Post 16 lanyard so they can bring their bike through the pedestrian gate and up to the Post 16 area. 

School Transport 

There are 2 dedicated bus routes for Post 16 students from areas in Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire that are outside of our usual school catchment area. 

Route 1 Post 16 Route 1 covers students living in Blackwell, Hilcote, Morton, Newton, Pilsley, Shirland, Stonebroom, Tibshelf and Westhouses.

This service is operated by E Coaches on behalf of the school, and is free for Post 16 students to use upon wearing their P16 lanyard.

Route 2 Post 16 Route 2 covers students living in Pinxton, Selston and South Normanton. 

This service is operated by Butler Brothers Coaches on behalf of the school, and is free for Post 16 students to use upon wearing their P16 lanyard. 

There are also 2 lower school bus routes available to Post 16 students

Huthwaite Bus Info (405/409/410) covers Huthwaite and parts of Stanton Hill Butler Brothers operate this service on behalf of the school, and these buses are also free for Post 16 students to use upon wearing their P16 lanyard. 

Kirkby Bus Info (401/402/403) covers Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nuncargate and Annesley Woodhouse.  Freeway Coaches operate this service on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council Transport Services.  All students need to pay to use this service. Students can either pay cash to the driver or obtain a pass through the Council (further details can be found on the route information page)  

Public Buses 

As well our dedicated School bus routes, there are several Trent Barton buses that frequently run past the school and are accessible via stops a brief walk from the school entrance drive:

  • threes – The 3A/3B buses run between Nottingham and Mansfield, and covers Bulwell, Newstead, Annesley, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Sutton-in-Ashfield and Kings Mill Hospital.   
  • nines – The 9.3 bus runs between Mansfield and Derby, and covers Pinxton, South Normanton, Alfreton, Somercotes, Leabrooks, Swanwick, Ripley, Denby Pottery and Kilburn. 

Travel can be paid for on the bus either via cash or card, or via the TrentBarton Mango app.  Users can also download the Hugo app to plan a trip and to check live arrival times.

Rail Travel 

Sutton Parkway and Kirkby-in-Ashfield train stations are within a 30 minute walk of Ashfield School.  Alternatively the 3A/3B Trent Barton buses also cover Kirkby-in-Ashfield train station and it takes approximately 10 minutes between the train station to the school via bus. 

Both stations form part of the Robin Hood Line providing train services between Nottingham and Worksop via Mansfield.  These services are run by East Midlands Railway

Help with cost of travel 

If you are unable to take advantage of the free bus travel provided by the school, here are some ways that could help with the cost of travel to Post 16: 

  • If you live over 4 miles away from school, and have a household income of less than £17,000 and/or in receipt of free school meals, you can apply to the Post 16 Discretionary Bursary Fund for help with your costs:

POST 16 Bursary Policy

  • Trent Barton offers pricing caps and discounted travel for students and under 18s when you use their Mango app. 
  • For students travelling by train, weekly or monthly season tickets may offer better value than buying regular single or return tickets.
    • A 16-17 Saver Railcard costs £30 for a year but offers 50% discount on all your rail travel, including season tickets, either for the year or until your 18th birthday.  
    • Once you turn 18 you can change to a 18-25 Railcard. This costs £30 for 1 year or £70 for 3 years and offers 1/3 off rail travel, but cannot be used on season tickets.

Road 

The school is located within a short distance of the A38, and is between the town centres of Sutton-in-Ashfield and Kirkby-in-Ashfield.
