Sport

This course is aimed at students who have a passion for sport and are looking to follow a career in sports performance, coaching/teaching, officiating, journalism, or medicine. It is a two-year course and is equivalent to one A Level. It is designed to be taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A Levels. The course uses a combination of assessment styles to help students apply their knowledge to succeed in the workplace and develop study skills to continue to Higher Education. Students will study each unit in depth to acquire a range of practical and transferrable skills. The range of assessments – both practical and written – help students showcase their learning and achievements to best effect. The course content will include four units: – Anatomy and Physiology, Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-being, Professional Development in the Sports Industry and Sports Leadership.

How you will study

During BTEC sport you will study a range of topics highlighted below, which will all require different styles of learning and teaching. You will be assessed in three separate ways, internal assessment, external assessments, and synoptic assessments. This will be a taught in both theoretical and practical concepts throughout the course. 

Component breakdown

Unit 1 –Anatomy and Physiology – Learners explore how the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems function and the fundamentals of the energy systems – 1 hour 30-minute exam. 

Unit 2 – Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport, and Well-being – Learners explore client screening and lifestyle assessment, fitness training methods and fitness programming to support improvements in a client’s health and well-being – Supervised assessment period of a maximum of 2 hours 30 minutes. 

Unit 3 – Professional Development in the Sports Industry – Learners explore the knowledge and skills required for different career pathways in the sports industry. Learners will take part in, and reflect on, a personal skills audit, career action plan and practical interview assessment activities – Coursework. 

Unit 4 – Sports Leadership – Learner’s study what makes a good leader, the different capacities of this role, and the leadership skills and techniques necessary when leading activities in different roles – Coursework.
